Couture: Spotlight on Eyelet

Each spring, as I stow my cashmere sweaters and wool skirts, I eagerly unpack my favorite spring and summer essentials. At the top of that list is anything eyelet. Equal parts laid back and ladylike, eyelet is the summer answer to a crisp white button up blouse. You feel put together, but somehow still breezy. Eyelet's subtle cutwork and embroidery gives the fabric a sense of polish, and yet it has the soft and breathable feel of that just-came-from-the-beach look. I love eyelet when paired with other spring and summer trends such as gingham, chambray, and linen. Eyelet can be a fun backdrop for a brightly colored spring or summer accessory, such as a bold tangerine handbag or a violet pair of pumps. But, it also dresses up nicely for warm afternoons at the office, or in my 85 degree classroom. I often pair a favorite eyelet blouse with dark skinny jeans and chunky cork wedge sandals. Add a fun, bright necklace, and you have a nearly effortless casual Friday work outfit. Eyelet is a fun fabric to use when playing with volume. Because you want eyelet to fit a little loose, giving the skin some room to breathe, it makes a great wearable fabric base for a trapeze dress, a loose shift dress, a ruffled top, or an off-the shoulder blouse. And you can't go wrong with a head-to-toe monochromatic look by pairing an eyelet blouse with white jeans. Here are some of my favorite eyelet picks for 2018.
