Couture: Athleisure Wear, Kickin' It Old School

If there is one style trend I've learned to embrace, it is athleisure. And this is coming from the girl who loves a good excuse to get all dolled up. I've been obsessed with Lululemon for over a decade now, but my collection of barre to bar clothing now extends to other athleisure brands including UK brand Sweaty Betty in all its Union Jack geometric glory, LornaJane for the line's easy to wear open-back tops, and yogi brand Alo for its ultra-slimming leggings. Sweaty Betty, Lorna Jane, and Alo are not that far off from Lululemon—each line is based around making moisture wicking fabric look chic enough to wear while running errands post-workout. Their aesthetic is one that I gravitate toward as a 30-something woman who has embraced the yoga-leggings-are-actual-pants movement. But, lately I've been gravitating toward an athleisure style that’s a bit more retro—one that’s more Run DMC than eighties-era jazzercise.

The iconic Adidas Originals Firebird track jacket became a thing several decades ago with the rise of hip-hop. This now-timeless jacket is having a bit of a moment and is being paired over fitted dresses, with sequined tuxedo pants, atop denim joggers, and over colorful rompers. It can be layered over a hoodie, paired with a silk blouse, or thrown over a graphic tee. It may be a throwback, but in no way does the Firebird jacket feel dated. I recently picked one up at a style event at my local Nordstrom. The session was called “Haute Sport” and promised to report on the latest athleisure trends. No surprise here, Adidas is where it’s at. Some of my favorite pieces from the show included sparkly platform Converse sneakers, a sunny yellow Adidas logo tank, a white triple stripe crop top, and a sporty marc Jacobs cross-body bag with a bevy of interchangeable bold-patterned straps. But the pièce de résistance was easily the Adidas track SST jacket, an updated version of the now vintage Firebird which has been made anew with additional brilliant white piping that gives it a little extra flare… a sure-to-become staple in my athleisure wear wardrobe.

Here’s the loot.
