Couture: Cozy Chic for Sightseeing

Sometimes when I layer up for a wintry day, I feel a bit like a kid all bundled up to the point that I can barely move your arms. It was inevitable that after the long underwear, the sweater, the scarf, the hat, the gloves, and finally the puffer coat were stacked and zipped that I would finally say with a sigh, "Mom, I have to go to the bathroom." And like the French saying of a thousand layers, the "Mille Fueille" would all be stripped back off again. Thanks for your unending patience, Mom.

While my late 1980s childhood look of fair isle sweaters and rainbow stripes are actually back in vogue of late, I had a more streamlined look in mind for a day of sightseeing in Switzerland. More apres ski fireside and less Full House Christmas snow episode. For this look, I paid attention to fabrics, selecting wool and cashmere, no synthetics, to ensure the warmest possible layers. The result? I was cozy warm all day without looking like the snowman in a "marshmallow world" like the Christmas song.

Here’s the look.
