Couture: The Perfect Mary Jane

There is something classic and ladylike about a mary jane that just delights me. Dating back to 1902 when a character by the same name appeared in the comic Buster Brown, and then famously worn by Shirley Temple in Baby Takes a Bow, the shoes didn't become widely worn until the fifties, and even then, they were a style mostly popular with children.

In the sixties, Twiggy donned mary janes and houses of fashion took notice. It was at that point when Yves Saint Laurent and Dior started styling them in patent leather, and often with a block heel. Since then, they've come into fashion every few years, gracing the runways of Marc Jacobs, Comme des Garcons, Manolo Blahnik, and Jimmy Choo. Thanks to the rounded toe and stacked heel, mary janes are a style that's easier taken from catwalk to sidewalk than other high fashion shoes.

Enter my favorite mary jane, a velvet stacked heel version with a crystal button detail. At nearly 4", have a dressier and sexier appeal than the traditional mary jane. And the peek-a-boo glimmer on the underside of the heel gives a hint of sparkle with every step.

I will wear them with black jeans and a blouse to work. But they will go great with my all sequin party outfit, or a great jumpsuit. Because they're a classic style, they will live in my closet for years to come. And you can find them at J.Crew.
